just the beginning

let me introduce myself.  my name is martine, i am 33 years old, i live in colorado springs, i am very happily married to ken, we have a beautiful 1 year old boy named chevy lee and i own a small raw food business in manitou springs called ‘chevy lee raw foods’.

i have been meaning to start a blog for some time now and now that i am starting one i can only hope that i will be disciplined enough to keep up with it.   i want to write about my relationship with food, drink and how integral this is in my life.  i think i can offer a different perspective.

like i said, i own a raw food food company.   i offer take out food once a week and i serve a 3 course dinner once per month.  i love food.  all food.  i do not discriminate, which is why this blog is entitled “fanatical free foodie”.  the fanaticism that surrounds food eludes me.  and it seems that fanaticism runs rampant especially in the raw food community.  a majority of the members of this community would state ‘raw foodist’ as practically part of their identity.  up there with gender and ethnicity.  many are focused on what percentage of their diet is raw and many will try to push their militaristic approach to food on friends and family and also onto the public.  this same fanaticism exists in the world of vegetarianism, veganism or breathatarianism.   personally, this attitude turns me off and i’m sure my anti-fanaticism will also turn some people off but i can only express my experience and how it makes me feel and hope that somewhere along the way, others may be able to relate.

i am a raw food chef for a living (well, i’m also a full time student at the moment) but i am not a raw foodist.  most everyone that is a lover of my raw foods (customers and friends) assumed at the beginning that i must be a raw foodist since i make raw food.   to me, this is a strange assumption.  just the same as someone assuming a stranger’s sexual identity based on something arbitrary like a hair cut or outfit.  but i realize that this assumption occurs because i am certainly in the minority.  many raw food chefs that i have heard of are proclaimed raw foodists.  anyways, i just want to express why i call myself fanatical-free.  now for where i’m going with this blog…..

i want to share my experiences and thoughts about food because i have so many thoughts about food.  food is one of my greatest pleasures in life.  it’s something my husband and i are obsessed with.  we think about food a lot.  we skim over recipes constantly.  we try new ones.  we write our own.  we talk about food, we taste food and most importantly, we make food together (at home, that is).  i’m on my own operating chevy lee raw foods, but i do love it when i get to have my husband in my commercial kitchen with me too.

i want to share what we experience with others, i want to hear how these experiences make others feel or how others can relate (or not for that matter), i want to post recipes and to share pictures.  and as you get to know me and my family, i want to get to know you.

stay tuned.

enchanté.

    Hi Martine,
Congrats on carving out a nice life for yourself and your family, and sharing your raw food discovers. I just wished that I lived nearby in Colorado to try your cuisine. I’m in San Diego, but when I travel I try to hit vegan restaurants, including the raw ones. If you ever make it to Minneapolis you might want to check out Ecopolitan. In west Los Angeles, I recommend Leaf Cuisine.

You make some very cogent statements about what I term “tribalism,” amongst foodist/foodies. It’s unfortunate that it seems like humans are programmed to be tribalistic, and look down on those with other viewpoints.

    Best of luck,
    Jim
